A high-speed pursuit by law enforcement culminated in the apprehension of a 26-year-old resident of Indianapolis on drug-related charges.
The individual, identified as Mercaydes Chism, was observed by two officers from the Indianapolis Metro Police Department (IMPD) parked unlawfully in a brown Ford Explorer alongside Grant Avenue near the East Side Pantry.
Chism was accompanied by two other individuals within the vehicle, while a crowd gathered around it, prompting suspicions of illicit activity among the officers. Upon their arrival, the group dispersed, and the Explorer rapidly departed the scene.
The officers pursued the vehicle due to their concerns regarding potential narcotics involvement. The chase led to a Kroger store located on East 10th Street, where the Explorer halted near the entrance. At this point, Chism exited the vehicle and began to walk away.
According to reports, one officer instructed her to return to the car while the other observed a male occupant in the rear seat making visible attempts to conceal or locate drugs within the vehicle.
Upon reentering the Explorer, Chism accelerated away at high speed. During her flight eastbound on Washington Street, she allegedly discarded a satchel from the window, which officers later retrieved.
Eventually, Chism came to a stop at the intersection of Washington Street and Post Road, where she surrendered to authorities.
A search of the discarded satchel revealed three bags containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine, each approximately the size of a golf ball, in addition to a smaller bag suspected to contain fentanyl. In total, law enforcement recovered 23.29 grams of suspected methamphetamine and 0.44 grams of suspected fentanyl.
When questioned regarding her decision to flee, Chism reportedly informed officers that her actions were motivated by her lack of a valid driver’s license. She indicated that there were additional circumstances surrounding her situation.
