Authorities in Lawrence County arrested an Ohio man on multiple drug trafficking charges involving heroin and crack cocaine.
Police began investigating Saturday afternoon after receiving a report of a possible DUI at the Wendy’s restaurant in Louisa. A caller had alerted authorities that four adults and several children entered the restroom and appeared impaired when they emerged.
A Kentucky State Police trooper later located the vehicle traveling on U.S. 23, roughly five miles north of Louisa. During the traffic stop, the driver, 33-year-old Sky Bentley of Portsmouth, Ohio, showed signs of impairment during a field sobriety test.
After Bentley gave consent to search the vehicle, police asked all occupants to exit—including four small children, three of whom had been sitting on the floor. Inside the car, officers discovered a bag of heroin, two bags of crack cocaine, and a large sum of cash.
Bentley was taken into custody and charged with trafficking in heroin and crack cocaine, importing heroin, aggravated DUI, wanton endangerment, and several additional offenses.
A passenger also faced a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge after voluntarily handing police a bag of the substance while exiting the vehicle.
Both individuals were booked into the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Paintsville.
