A man who was shot by an Auburn police officer earlier this month now faces multiple felony charges, according to the DeKalb County Prosecutor’s Office.
In a Sunday statement, the prosecutor detailed the events of June 1, when reports indicated Kyle Leins had pointed a firearm at someone inside a home in Auburn. When officers arrived and began speaking with individuals at the scene, Leins returned.
Officer Noah Woollweever of the Auburn Police Department spotted Leins and ordered him to stop. At that point, Leins pulled out a gun.
Leins allegedly fired four shots at Officer Woollweever, aiming into the house where he had previously made threats.
As he fled the scene, Leins fired two additional rounds at another officer. One second later, Officer Woollweever returned fire, shooting a single round that struck Leins and ended the pursuit.
Police immediately took Leins into custody and provided medical attention. Authorities reported recovering three firearms and several loaded magazines either on or near Leins at the time of arrest.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Leins now faces several serious charges:
-
Two counts of attempted murder (Level 1 felony)
-
Burglary (Level 2 felony)
-
Criminal recklessness (Level 5 felony)
-
Intimidation (Level 5 felony)
-
Three counts of unlawful carrying of a handgun (Level 5 felony)
-
Resisting law enforcement (Level 6 felony)
The release did not specify when Leins is expected to appear in court.
Officials also confirmed that standard protocol was followed in the aftermath of the officer-involved shooting. The Indiana State Police conducted an investigation and cleared Officer Woollweever of any wrongdoing, concluding that his use of force was justified.
