Two young girls, just 3 and 5 years old, died after becoming trapped beneath a sinking boat on Cedar Creek Lake in Texas.
According to Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse, the accident happened Sunday night when a boat carrying 12 people lost power and flipped over. “The boat had lost power. It was overloaded, and it capsized,” Hillhouse told KLTV.
While the adults managed to swim to shore, the two young girls were unable to escape. “They had life vests on, but they actually got caught under the boat when it was sinking and couldn’t get out,” Hillhouse explained.
The tragic incident occurred around 8 p.m., and emergency crews responded by 9:30 p.m. after receiving a call for help.
Cedar Creek Lake is a popular getaway, Hillhouse noted, with many rental homes and lakefront properties attracting vacationers. “Our call log goes up on Cedar Creek Lake,” he said.
Justice of the Peace Jamie Fawns confirmed that alcohol did not play a role in the incident and ordered full autopsies for both girls.
As Texas Game Wardens continue to investigate, Hillhouse urged the public to remain cautious on the water. “The Cedar Creek Lake can get extremely rough,” he said. “Watch the weather, watch the waves. When it gets choppy, it’s really better to get off the water. Bad things can happen.”
