Indiana State Police announced Monday night that one of its troopers has been arrested on multiple criminal charges, though few details have been released about the case.
According to online court records, 39-year-old Andrew G. Kocsis faces a felony charge of theft involving property valued between $750 and $50,000, a felony count of obstruction of justice for altering or damaging records, and a misdemeanor count of fraud. His initial hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. on July 8 in St. Joseph Superior Court 2 in South Bend.
The probable cause affidavit was not available in court records as of Monday night.
In a news release, state police did not specify whether Kocsis had been processed at a local jail. He was not listed as an inmate in St. Joseph County as of Monday evening. No information was provided regarding the actions that led to the charges.
The investigation into Kocsis began in mid-October after state police received a theft allegation from an unidentified source. James D. Luttrell, a former Grant County prosecutor based in Marion, has been appointed as the special prosecutor for the case.
According to information posted by Indiana State University, Kocsis served as a recruiter in the Indiana State Police human resources division as recently as January 2024. He has been with the agency since 2008 and was most recently assigned to its general headquarters in Indianapolis.
According to the release, Kocsis will be placed on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of both the criminal case and an internal investigation.
Kocsis is being represented by Donald J. Schmid a former federal prosecutor based in South Bend. News 8 reached out to Schmid’s office via email for comment on the charges.
