Ukraine has claimed responsibility for a successful series of strikes inside Russian air base, targeting key military infrastructure in a bold escalation of the conflict that has now stretched beyond three years.
According to an intelligence source cited by the Kyiv Independent, Ukrainian forces damaged a gas pipeline and destroyed a water pipeline in Vladivostok—critical assets serving nearby military installations. Fires reportedly broke out near the Sea of Japan after the pipeline explosions, sending shockwaves through Russian defense circles.
Strike on Russian Air Base
The Ukrainian General Staff also confirmed an overnight assault on the Borisoglebsk air base in Russia’s Voronezh region, a site that houses Su-34, Su-35S, and Su-30SM fighter jets. Shared via Facebook, the military’s update revealed damage to a training aircraft, glide bomb storage, and potentially other aircraft.
The attacks occurred in the early morning hours between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on July 5, just days after Vladivostok’s 165th anniversary celebrations on July 2. Russian special services and repair teams arrived on-site soon after the explosions.
Russian authorities have yet to publicly respond to the reported strikes.
Strategic Deep Strikes
The latest operations form part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to disrupt Russia military infrastructure far beyond the front lines. Ukrainian forces have previously claimed the destruction of more than 40 aircraft at multiple airfields across Russia in a surprise drone offensive.
Meanwhile, Russia launched an intense overnight drone barrage against Ukraine. Ukraine’s air force reported 322 drones and decoys were deployed; 157 were shot down, while 135 were likely diverted by electronic warfare systems. The Khmelnytskyi region in western Ukraine was reportedly the hardest hit. Regional Governor Serhii Tyurin confirmed no injuries or damage from the attack.
Civilian Toll in Kyiv
In a separate major aerial assault Friday night, Russia targeted Kyiv, marking the largest airstrike since the war began. Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced on Saturday that two people were killed and 31 injured in the bombardment.
U.S.-Ukraine Diplomatic Talks
The attacks coincided with a high-level phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy described the discussion as “very important and productive,” with talks reportedly covering enhanced U.S.-Ukrainian air defense cooperation, joint weapons manufacturing, and new peace initiatives.
When asked about the call, Trump stated,
“We had a very good call, I think… I don’t know. I can’t tell you whether or not [peace] is going to happen.”
The U.S. recently paused certain military aid deliveries to Ukraine, including air defense missile systems, prompting European allies to explore alternative solutions to bridge the gap.
