U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Texas intercepted nearly 48 pounds of cocaine during a drug smuggling attempt on Tuesday, with the narcotics carrying a street value of over $639,000.

The seizure took place at the Hidalgo International Bridge, where officers stopped a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu entering from Mexico. The vehicle was referred for a secondary inspection using non-intrusive technology and a canine unit. A physical search uncovered 20 packages of suspected cocaine hidden inside the car.

The drugs weighed a total of 47.93 pounds (21.74 kg) and were valued at approximately $639,938 on the street.

“This drug seizure is a direct result of our officers’ vigilance and unwavering commitment to protecting our communities,” said Carlos Rodriguez, Port Director at the Hidalgo Port of Entry. “Their dedication plays a vital role in keeping dangerous substances off our streets and ensuring public safety.”

CBP officers seized both the narcotics and the vehicle. The driver was handed over to the Texas Department of Public Safety, which is now leading the criminal investigation.
